Running For His Dad

Paul wants everyone to know about Frontotemporal Dementias – the degenerative brain disorder that has impacted his family forever – and he's lacing up his running shoes and pounding the pavement for this tragic cause.

Paul's dad was diagnosed with Frontotemporal Dementia in July 2009, so Paul is running the 10K of the Cowtown Marathon to raise awareness and funds for the Association for Frontotemporal Dementias.

In order to accomplish his goal, Paul is recruiting his family and friends to run with him or at least support his efforts with a minimal donation to AFTD.

"This is a rare and devastating disease," Paul said. "I just hope to raise awareness and support in any way I can."

The hallmark of FTD is a gradual, progressive decline in behavior and/or language that has a relatively young age of onset. As the disease progresses, it becomes increasingly difficult for people to plan or organize activities, behave appropriately in social or work settings, interact with others, and care for oneself, resulting in increasing dependency.

The Association for Frontotemporal Dementias (AFTD) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to: Promote and fund research into finding the cause, therapies, and cures for the frontotemporal dementias; Provide information, education and support to persons diagnosed with frontotemporal dementias (FTD), their families and caregivers; Educate physicians and allied health professionals about the FTDs and how to improve patient care; Bring about greater public awareness of the nature and prevalence of the frontotemporal dementias and the needs of those who are coping with them; Advocate with public officials and promote public and private programs that provide appropriate, affordable and high-quality long term health care and social services.
